This is an original illustration of a young widow. She dons the grieving attire dutifully, but there was something about her that was almost too demure, too composed, almost as if she was not actually sad that her husband had met his untimely death.

The story was that this young woman, beautiful and elegant, was the anti-thesis of the fairy tale figure of Blackbeard (if you don't know, Blackbeard is a serial-wife-killer. He married women then decapitated them and stored their heads in his special room).
