Tangent Photography Collective
(founded in 2012 in Tamaki, Aotearoa)

Our kaupapa

Tangent has a history of advocating for the insertion of photo-filmic practice into local contemporary art discourse. Through processes of peer review and feedback we have encountered, informed and gathered together work by emerging and established artists. We have curated exhibitions of this work, made films, produced publications, and staged artist talks, presentations and workshops.

As artists we see these extraordinary times of cultural, political and environmental crises as the foci of our practices, and the impetus for our collective actions. Tangent aim to be connectors, conduits, active makers and curators in the space of lens-based imaging.

Collectively we operate in and value an open and expanded field of photographic imaging. Our purpose is to explore new models for action and engagement, audience and output. We are artists, curators, directors, educators, filmmakers, sound recordists, photographers and publishers.

Our manifesto:

We collectively commit to the following in our processes and practices:

•    Multiplicity and diversity (of process, of methodologies, of community)
•    Polyphony of voices within the collective
•    A commitment to sustainable practices, individually and within the collective
•    Emphasis on the local and geopolitical
•    Experimental processes and platforms for encountering lens-based artworks
•    The principles and relationships described in Te Tiriti o Waitangi
