Coordinates

The challenge was to design a magazine to apply our knowledge on visuals, typography, color, and layout.
Coordinates is a travel lifestyle concept magazine featuring experiences through the eyes of locals. Whether you're planning, daydreaming or looking for inspiration for your next journey, Coordinates offers both the familiar and unexpected captured by locals, top travel writers, and photographers of the world. Coordinates is a monthly magazine with a main destination covered in each issue.

PROCESS
I started by brainstorming possible names for the magazine first. Once I landed on "coordinates", I sketched several ideas for the logotype. I researched typefaces knowing I wanted something reminiscent of a compass—rounded/soft and friendly—Publica Play, designed by Marcus Sterz at FaceType Foundry based in Vienna, Austria checked all these boxes. I manipulated the typeface so the letter C would resemble a compass.
The main typefaces for the magazine layout are Avenir—chosen for its readability, clean geometric lines and variety of weights—used for titles, and Georgia—chosen for its elegance and readability in various sizes and screens—used for the text body.
The main colors of the magazine are black and white to allow the images and illustrations to shine on their own. Each article in the magazine uses accent colors featured in the images to create hierarchy—For example, the Unravelling Vietnam article uses red in its titles as a nod to the country’s flag and the symbolism of the color in Vietnamese culture.
