Fade In│Fade Out

My multi-disciplinary visual arts work reflects my desire to participate in inaccessible public spaces in my city, and to reimagine them into spaces that are habitable and welcoming to me. It is an attempt to subvert restrictions and surveillance imposed on me by sociocultural and religiopolitical dictates, and include myself in inaccessible, heteropatriarchal spaces.

This body of work a milestone in my journey of using art as a means to mediate my limited access to public space. In the chaos of Karachi, I was drawn to scenes of stillness, pause and rest which posed a hard contrast to their surroundings. The spaces and people I documented through the frame of my car window held a sort of liminal quality, a disruption to the ordinary. The blurry and grainy quality in some of my photography and videos reveals my distance and a disconnect from my subjects. The liminality of these moments fractures the chaotic reality they exist within, creating space for a reality of my own imagining.
