School Cemetery: Cemetery of Forgotten Books

School Cemetery

Fourth Year of Architecture

For this project, two Aldo Rossi's typologies were randomly assigned and were to be interpreted and make an analogy out of them.
Also the topography and a natural element and its location were assigned randomly. Wood was set as a primary material and glass as secondary.
The number of users were to be between 1 and 24 people.
Escuela Cementerio

"The urban artifacts such as a building, a street, a district are considered as as a work of art, which are manifestations of social and religious life. (...) Rossi supports Claude Levi-Strauss and consider that the city achieves a balance between natural and artificial elements as it is an object of nature and a subject of culture."
The Architecture of the City - City Evaluated by Aldo Rossi.

Taking in consideration the definitions of these typologies we understand that:
School: An institution for instruction in a particular skill or field.
Cemetery: A place where the dead are buried.

By bringing these two opposite worlds as a cultural manifestation, we can categorize them as:
Cementerio: Lugar, generalmente cercado, destinado a enterrar cadáveres.

So, the program that developed from this analysis was a Cemetery of Forgotten Books. A library that shelters books that have been prohibited and restricted to all kind of readers throughout history.
As the books that dwell in this sanctuary are considered a taboo and banned for so long, the entrance is enveloped by mystery and discretion, hidden in the underworld. Moreover, as this sanctuary is a source of knowledge, after experiencing the darkness and loneliness of the underworld where the books are, the user comes out to the light symbolizing the enlightenment. Finally, as this is a sacred place, it must hold its mystery along. Therefore, this building is hidden in nature, challenging the visitor to discover it.
Following the logic of pilling up programmatic blocks in a Jenga-like style, each block is made of modular and interlocking smaller wooden blocks where the books will be stored and displayed.
