January is the first month of the year in both the Gregorian and Julian calendars. It is named after the Roman god of doors, Janus, in Western languages. The months of January and February did not take place in earlier versions of the Roman calendar, which divided the year into 10 months and left 61 days unaccounted for in winter. They were both added together in the calendar around 700 BCE. Due to this, January and February were initially the last months of the calendar year, which began in March (Martius). However, in 450 BCE, the beginning of the year went away on 1 January.

January was originally 30 days when it was first added to the 10-month Roman calendar. However, Julius Caesar added one day in January and made it 31 days longer in 46 BCE.
