Well, the winter is yet to arrive but you should not wait for learning important care tips to maintain your horse’s health and happiness during those cold months. Cold temperature and frosty airs will make it difficult for him to survive. Studies have shown that horses need extra care in winter. Therefore, it’s best to be ready so he may not feel discomfort during this beautiful season.

If he spends long hours standing in open with no shed or other run-in, he will soon get sick. A shelter will help him stay away from any sickness. If he feels cold even in the shelter, cover him with a clean and properly fitted blanket. Do arrangements and maintain appropriate warmth in the shelter, if you want to enjoy horse ride throughout the season.

Offer Water Regularly: Water consumption is imperative for the health. Cold water doesn’t appeal your horse. He can be dehydrated even during those cold days too. Make sure you offer him warm water so he may feel fresh and hydrated. 

Be Attentive to His Diet: In winters, horses lose weight very quickly. When they shiver due to excessive cold weather, they lose calories and lose weight every passing day. This is the time, when he needs more food to keep him fit and warm from inside. So, it’s your responsibility to pay attention to his eating habits during those months and also the energy level. Good-quality hay in sufficient amount will help him to be the track of wellness. The coldest winter months wouldn’t seem a problem to him.

Make Regular Cleaning A Priority: Your horse may experience uneasiness in its saddle area, inside bell boots, and in and around girth, horse reins, or other accessories when you frequently forget to save him from a snow fall. In that case, you can pay extra attention towards the cleanliness to make him feel light and joyful at the same time. Check the blanket regularly to make sure he does not grow any bacteria-led problems.

If you notice any wound caused by horse flies, lice, gnats, pests or other small insects, you can simply use non chemical horse fly spray to save him from any skin problem. If there is a place which you notice gets rubbed more often, take care of it properly. Ignorance will lead him to certain skin infections.

Other Horse Care Tips: Keeping the horse in movement, providing safe footing, allowing for barn ventilation, checking hooves, adding minerals to his diet, monitoring weight, offering regular medical care will keep him away from any winter-related skin problem or disease.
