P2: Principles of Gestalt

Objective: Develop engaging illustrations that effectively communicate the gestalt  principles of similarity, proximity, continuance and closure. All illustrations were completed on the computer using the typeface platelet designed by Conor Mangat. The complete project brief (with objectives), design inspiration, development and sketches, additional illustrations and more are all captured here—take a look.

Similarity: groups of items separated by the viewer based on similar characteristics. For this illustration I just had fun trying to find a unique way to portray similarity that wasn't simply a few similar items scattered about.

Closure: An image that leaves out certain detail that the viewer fills in or completes. I view this illustration as a close up on a highway map.

Proximity: items visually sorted into groups based on closeness in placement. I chose the letterform "E" for my first name and imagined this like an exercise in sorting myself.

Continuance: an image composed in a way that suggests further movement, space or pattern. I see this illustration as an incomplete link in a chain.

A large scale illustration demonstrating continuance. I really enjoyed toying with the octothorp and ended up with what I see as a set of plumbing pipes with it's skeletal quality.
