Campus Lake Wayfinding System

OUR MISSION

Our goal was to create a way finding system for the Carbondale Campus Lake. The lake is very well known by locals and University students with a variety of recreational activities to participate in. However, new students and visitors may not find the benefits that Campus Lake has to offer because of the poor signage.  By utilizing metal signage, vinyl banners, sidewalk markers, and entrance way signs, we gave clarity to the Campus Lake’s way finding system as well as exemplified what benefits it contributes to the community.

THE ASSESSMENT

The existing Campus Lake way finding system consist of minimal and inconsistent pathway and trail signs. Information signs do not consist of “You Are Here” indicators on the map. Pathways are also missing mile markers to track distance.  In addition to poorly marked signs, many of the signs are rusted and covered in graffiti. Due to the vandalism, signs are either taken down or left up which takes away from the lake’s natural beauty and causes confusion.
BRAND DEVELOPMENT

Because Campus Lake is a large mass of land, we wanted the brand to communicate clean design to act cohesively with the way finding system. The logo was made to be simplistic to read, but to make a recognizable mark to the community. The color scheme needed to be bright, but stay with a natural feel. We selected each major point of the trail and chose the color that it best coordinated with. We used a series of icons to help navigation throughout the Campus Lake trails.

OUR SOLUTION

Our solution to improving the current way finding system includes multiple signs to help individuals navigate throughout Campus Lake. There are many activities that the lake provides and our easy-to-read signs aid in successfully pointing people in the right direction.

Vinyl signs hung from light posts will help people get to the correct section of the lake. Aluminum metal signs will be used along the path for navigation by utilizing icons and our specific color coding. Sidewalk markers placed on the paths will help track distance. Map information signs at the beginning of each entrance, as well as throughout the trails  will additionally assist in direction.
