“Gettin’ Squatchy” (Relief Print)

The project was created for my Intro to Printmaking class. Each student had to chose a theme to work with for the entire semester, so the theme I chose was cryptozoology. I wanted to come up with my own way of illustrating these creatures since we don’t have any real pictures of them. For my Bigfoot inspiration, I used a really common screen shot of the legendary Patterson-Gimlin film. I decided to put him near a tree since many stories involve Bigfoot hanging around trees.

“Ugly Cat” (Screen Print)

This project was created for my screen printing class.  I chose “vintage Halloween decor” as my theme for that semester, and my goal was to use more than orange and black to depict Halloween. A lot of vintage candy bags that were screen printed showed black cats and I wanted to pay tribute to that idea of the cat being an important representation of Halloween.

 “Ghost Town 1/8” (Screen Print)

These screen prints were part of my “vintage Halloween decor” theme. I wanted to represent my own idea of a haunted mansion by placing the outline of the house on top of a solid color. This was a technique I learned from a screen printing class on Creativebug. The bright red was the first color I knew I wanted to work with, so I picked blues and purples that I felt would contrast enough with the red to make it stand out. The second edition of this print with the hand prints was only done once and I did this to give a new meaning to the print.

Intaglio is a form of printmaking I had never tried before. I started carving into metal plates recently and found that it was a completely different approach to printmaking compared to what I’m used to. These prints were part of my Aztec culture theme. I wanted to learn more about my ancestors and their beliefs so I researched common themes and figures in Aztec culture. Two of these prints are about specific Aztec gods (Quetzalcoatl and Mictlantecuhtli) and the other is about Teotihuacan.
