P2: Principles of gestalt

Objective: Become familiar with the Gestalt principles of similarity, proximity, continuance, and closure; and illustrate them compositionally.  All work was completed in Adobe InDesign using only characters in the Platelet font. The complete project brief (with objectives) Design inspiration, and developmental sketches can be viewed here- http://drp.mk/Q36z7m3N1t

Similarity: Similarity is when similar looking objects are seen as a group. A slightly dissimilar object(s) can be used to attract attention. This was created by making a checkerboard of the letters B and W and removing some of the Bs

Proximity: A close distance of objects to one another is proximity. When proximity is created, objects can be seen as one group. I displayed the principle of proximity by using some Xs spaced far away with each smaller Xs right next to the bigger ones.

Continuance: Continuance is when one's focus is drawn to follow one object continuing through another object or through empty space. This principle was displayed by making diagonal rows of Zs. Aren't your eyes just drawn to following the diagonal lines?

Closure: Closure is when incomplete objects, or a mixture of completely closed and incomplete objects, can be perceived by a person to be a complete image. This number 7 isn't completely outlined in black, but you can easily see that it is a seven.

A closeup of the "dizzy tunnel" shown below. you can see that not all the rings of type aren't perfectly aligned, and you can see where I decided I was getting too small.

This large image of a bunch of inequality signs forming a "dizzy tunnel" is another example of continuance. I tried to make the "tunnel" by typing inequality symbols on a circle and then making smaller copies of that circle inside the previous circle until it was as small as I could go.
