This was a fascinating exercise in what it means to draw an Asian face. You can see in the process that there were a few rounds of edits after my starting point (and personal interpretation of the main character's features). After much conversation with the team at Random House, and a few direct photo references, we arrived at a conclusion that felt true to the writer's vision. What I realized was that my own views on "Asian-ness" may not match those of other Asians. I thank Dana Li, designer at Penguin, for facilitating an enlightening and respectful process!
