Final Battle, Acrylic Paint, 18 x 48, 10/1/19 (#1 & #2)
Culminating Battle
Project Description
The goal of this peace was to create conflict between our two previous pieces. We were to use what we learned in class to make it seem as though the paintings were at war using overlap, color, scale, etc. Since the previous two paintings were so similar to each other it wasn't that hard to combine the two and make them clash. The "mountains" were flipped so that they were facing each other, and the "houses" were made more numerous and larger in scale advancing towards the "shields". Where they met the conflict ensued, using overlap and transparency to represent it.
Critique Notes and Reflections
The critiques for this piece were pretty similar to the two in the last exercise, but weren't the exactly same. This piece made good use of scale and numbers to fill the page in such a way that the story could be conveyed. The next thing was it had recognizable shapes, that were ambiguous, which means that even though they were shapes that we know from our everyday lives they were read differently then usual. The complementary colors in this piece also helped emulate the conflict cause by the "vibrating" edge. The colder colors of this piece were muted in such a way that created a colder, more serious atmosphere that created a sense of tension. Though the most interesting critique was that a multitude of different narratives were interpreted from this piece. Such as, urban vs. rural, or winter vs. fall.

Space Through Color and Atmospheric Perspective
Project Description
The goal of this exercise was to create the illusion of space using color and atmospheric perspective. This was accomplished by drawing two slips of paper that had two word prompts on them. These word prompts had to be interpreted by the artists as geometric shapes, one for each word, and arranged in a way to create the illusion of space. The first painting made use of overlap and a "horizon line" to create a sense of space. While, the same concepts were used in the second painting, but with different colors.
Critique Notes and Reflection
Both of the paintings were extremely similar so the critiques apply to both of the paintings. They both make good use of a "horizon line" to help draw attention and to give a familiar seen that is easily recognizable. The next thing is that they make good use of texture, making it seem like it fades in the distance. The next things could be grouped together, the atmospheric perspective and the cold atmosphere, which are achieved by using muddy "cold" colors that make things fade in the distance and feel like there's space. Another good point is that they're so similar it makes it easier to relate them together.

Some of the other things noticed weren't as good, but not necessarily bad. The muddy and cold colors made the piece feel dull, which could be good or bad, depending on the situation. Same with the messy feel it has, which makes it seem to fade better when looking at it from a distance.

Space Through Value, Color, & Atmospheric Perspective
Project Description
This exercise is made up of 4 different paintings that incorporate the lessons from the previous project, but this time using color as well. The goal of these 4 paintings was to convey space through the use of value, color, and atmospheric perspective. The first painting used grayscale rectangular polygons to represent the transition from a lighter value to a darker one. The second painting use grayscale rectangular polygons as well, but the value change goes from from dark to light in this one. The third one was made out of semicircular polygons and was used to represent the change from red to yellow values on a cooler background. Finally the fourth painting used semicircular polygons that transitioned from a green to blue value on a warmer background.
Critique Notes and Reflections
The critique of these painting was mostly positive, but there was a few things that needed changing. Painting #1 made a good use of texture (even if it was accidental), the shapes varied in size, it had the correct amount of value changes, and made good use of patterns. Painting #2 had all the same qualities as #1, but something that was a little confusing but accepted was that the overlap was in the wrong order, but it still worked out in the end. Painting #3 didn't recieve as many positive reviews, the colors all kind of blended together at a distance, and has a muddy value. The problem that I personally observed was that it didn't have enough value change as it could have, which is something that could be changed. Painting #4 was received well, it was said to have a good amount of value change, but I personally observed that the paint needed to be more evenly applied.

VALUE AND SPATIAL INVESTIGATION
Project Description
This project is made up of 5 different paintings using grayscale and rectangular polygons. The goal of these 5 paintings was to try and convey space using only grayscale and various techniques. Paintings number 1 and 2, are rectangular polygons that all have to be the same size and must overlap one another. Number 3 and 4, are rectangular polygons that vary in size and can't overlap one another. While, number 5 is a combination of the 2 styles, it has to have rectangular polygons that vary in size and overlap one another.
Critique Notes and Reflections
The critiques that were received, were mostly positive. Painting number 1 was considered an ideal use of layered values, and transparency. Number 2 was found to be a good use of the value gradient. While number 3 had repetition/symmetry, a softer, less militaristic feel to it, and took up most of the page, the values didn't have enough contrast. Number 4 demonstrated all the some qualities as number 3, but the contrast was much better. Number 5 didn't receive any critiques from anyone else, but in my opinion it used up most of the page, had nice symmetry, and good value shifts.
The only things that I would change if I had to do this again, is take my time and make the lines a little neater, and add more contrast where it was needed.
