Card Game Design

I have always believed that you should have a personal project outside of your current job that you have absolute control over. A project where you have final-cut. As an unashamed geek; I make board games. I make these games with my brother knowing full well that it won't make much money. And mostly made for the pure fun of it. Admittedly, it has resulted in some interesting turns. At the end of October, we will be heading off to Germany to attend the largest board game convention for the launch of our game to the European market. Working on this game outside of my 9-5 (sometimes) job has resulted in a happier work-life balance. I have noticed that some companies are encouraging their employees to do the same - not make board games, but rather pursue a passion project that is outside of the realms of the company business. Does anyone work for a company that actively does this? Or do you own a company where you encourage your employees to not just be company-centric all the time? If yes, what have been your findings?
