Intangible Heritage: Alan Lomax Archive

Alan Lomax devoted his life to the collection, preservation, and dissemination of folk music and oral histories. His archive includes thousands of sound recordings, photographs, videos, and manuscripts, accessible online through the Association for Cultural Equity. Intangible Heritage remixes audio selections from the collection the technical glitches, background noise, and Alan's own commentary draw attention to the process of documentation and Alan as the figure behind the scenes.

The audio disc is presented in a box set, accompanied by a set of eight fold-out posters. These compositions use Alan's own photographs, along with dates, locations, song lyrics, and other fragmented notes. Abstract gestures toward language—lines of punctuation, black bars—speak to the intangible nature of oral tradition, Alan's quest to preserve it, and the impossibility of records to fully represent their subjects.
