Documenting Work, People & Place
NN Cannery History Project

This campaign was inspired by memories in the NN Cannery. The backdrop of the banners a historic blue print from the 1947 remodel of the cannery that included a new fish processing facility that features a massive multi window paned face that gives this cannery one of the most distinct identifying features in the area. Drawing vector artwork of this iconic building was tedious but I simply could not leave it undone. I believe the results are well worth the extra effort. This project received an Honorable Mention Award by AIGA Alaska during Design Week at the Anchorage Museum in October of 2019.

The central images of the campaign have been adapted from the graffiti covered walls from the Clean Up Crew Locker. The room, like many others at the cannery remain frozen in time and contains the voices of former cannery workers. The photo of the room provides a sneak peek into the architectural workspace that reveals many of the experiences of workers during our short but grueling salmon seasons just before the cannery closed in the mid 1990’s.

It’s quite fitting then to commemorate the end of the productive years of the NN Cannery by creating a campaign with assets that reveal the stories contained in a place that made such a significant contribution to the seafood industry of Alaska. This marketing campaign echoes the shared experience of seafood processors today with cannery workers of the last century despite the major evolutions of the mechanical process of preserving salmon from the last remaining great salmon fishery of the Pacific Northwest for tables around the world.
