Latino Film Festival 2019

26th Annual Latino Film Festival
San Diego 2019
I created a poster for the 26th Annual Latino Film Festival in San Diego. The brief was to create a poster with the text displayed above and have the poster display imagery related to film and the Latinx community. However they did not want anything too cliche or "on the nose" latino and asked not to use imagery such as candy skulls.

After brainstorming and research, I gained inspiration from both Mayan and Aztec sculptures and tile work as well as the traditional "Navajo/Mexican" blanket shape found in this font. I created a two headed snake that would look like it was made out of handcrafted tiles. I purposely left the tiles imperfect to give it a more human feel. To bring it back to film, I made the body of the serpent to look like a film strip. To really drive down the film strip, I added bits of it in to create a half sun rising above the snake. The poster still needed some interest and to separate the text from the imagery, I added the geometric shape found in the font to look like it ties together like a blanket.
Above are the primary colors and below are the secondary colors. Red, Blue and Yellow are bright primary colors and would grab attention. I softened and darkened them into earthy tones to make it more sophisticated and made the snake a grey green to make it pop regardless of which of the other three main colors it would go against. For the sunrise I needed a gradient of oranges and yellows based on a mix of the primary red and yellow.
Above and below are alternate layouts using the same assets from the original poster.
Above is another iteration for the text "26th Annual San Diego Latino Film Festival using the original path of the snake. This text can easily overlay on top of the tiles as below. These can be printed on stickers, badges, tickets, and other smaller festival paraphernalia.
Above is a simple line/border using the same shape from the poster to keep the branding cohesive. This can be used on a web page to separate sections or as a decorative piece elsewhere.
Below is a mockup of the Poster on a barrel wrap for advertisement throughout San Diego as well as at the venue.
For apparel, I envision the serpent wrapping around the side to the tee front to back and the sun on the side of a sleeve as well as the word marks on the front. This is a shirt I could see people working the event wearing as well as something wearable enough that they could be sold to visitors. Having the information printed on the "tag" would also be a nice professional touch. Lanyards would also be popular and somewhat cheap to make for an event where many people likely would need badges.
I also created a brighter iteration of the poster on the left that's a bit punchier and an alternative color set on the right for special events during the Film Festival and as a special collector's piece or instead of the original if the original colors are too "cliche". I would love to have the black set on just about anything.
