Nineteen Bristol Bay High School students participated in a digital storytelling workshop to produce 17 documentary films associated with the 128-year-old <NN> Cannery at South Naknek. Topics, included Mug Up Stories, Women Workers, and the 1919 Influenza Pandemic. Students received credit from the University of Alaska Bristol Bay Campus. 
    
Participating 9th & 10th grade students also created 15 movie posters that reflect their personal connection to the film research materials. Both components of the workshop introduced students to the craft of filmmaking, graphic design, storytelling, oral history and research.

Students were introduced the basics of graphic design including message development, central image selection, working with assets and transparencies, developing a color palate and the importance of typography and copywriting. Themes for the designs were based on the research and personal narratives students discovered in the film workshop. Many of the photos students sourced images and assets from their own or their families photo collections.

Overall our approach to the design component of the project was to encourage the students to leverage their own assets and experiences to fuel their designs. It was an absolute gift to be afforded the opportunity to work with such a talented group of students and aid them in finding creative and practical ways to explore themselves and their relationship to the last great salmon fishery in the world.

All aspects of the design project were created exclusively on iPad Pro’s with a wide variety of Adobe CC mobile apps.
