Brian Shanahan DEA's profile

DEA Investigation Implicates Honduran President

Longtime law enforcement professional Brian Shanahan guided activities of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). He focused on counter-narcotics activities in the United States and countries in the Caribbean and Latin America. As a DEA agent, Brian Shanahan’s areas of focus included countries in Central America.

Court documents filed in Manhattan in June 2019 revealed details of a major money laundering and drug trafficking probe initiated in 2013 that culminated in the arrest of former Honduran congressman Juan Antonio “Tony” Hernández in Miami, Florida. He is the brother of Honduras President Juan Orlando Hernández, who has long been an ally of the United States.

As reported in InSight Crime, the connection to President Hernández does not end there, with the mayor of El Paraíso allegedly spending drug proceeds totaling $1.5 million in support of Hernández’ presidential campaign. This included “gifts and favors” and “cash bribes” distributed to local politicians.

Drug trafficking has allegedly been used by President Hernández and high ranking officials to maintain their base of political power. The question now is how this will impact the US-Honduran relationship and their continued joint efforts to fight drug trafficking.
