Trauma Focused Therapy for Teens

The Therapy that Works: Trauma Focused Therapy for Teens
Understanding all of the medical/scientific jargon related to trauma and therapy can be quite challenging as a parent. Trauma focused therapy for teens can quickly become an extremely important part of your teens life if they have experienced trauma in their life. This type of therapy plays a pivotal role in helping them to rebuild their lives in a healthy way.

Trauma focused therapy differs from other types of therapy because it is specifically aligned to meet the unique needs of the individual and their past experiences. This therapy type recognizes and emphasizes understanding how the traumatic experience impacts a child’s mental, behavioral, emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being. Through this recognition, therapists are able to work to understand the connection between the trauma experience and the child’s emotional and behavioral responses.

Some of the main benefits of trauma focused therapy for teens include:

Teens will learn to practice trauma processing or integration
This therapy can identify triggers
Re-establish safety
Develop healthy coping skills
Learn about how trauma impacts them
Decrease in traumatic stress symptoms

All the Methods

As a part of the treatment process, clinicians will implement certain methods to help teens cope with their trauma and adopt healthy habits. Of course, these methods could vary based on your child’s specific needs and responses to treatment. However, here are some examples of trauma-based therapeutic methods that may be used to help treat your teen:

Drawing maps of your house or community to discuss “safe places” or where you find feelings of safety (or lack thereof)
Using Feeling Faces Flashcards (pictures of faces with different feelings) to identify emotions
Playing Feelings Charades – a game that requires youth to act out different sets of emotions
Teaching relaxation skills in youth-friendly ways (e.g. yoga, deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, guided imagery)
Listening to music and reading lyrics to help reflect on the youth’s experience of trauma, safety, or other emotions
