Cultured Crooks Gig Poster

My goal was to create a gig poster for an indie band that is effortless cool. I received inspiration from a lot of 90s posters I liked and put a modern twist on it. I also listened to a lot of indie music to get a feel for the style I wanted.

At first in my sketches I was doing different styles of posters, then I decided I wanted to do a 90s inspired one because I have been wanting to try that style for a while. After that I looked a lot of 90s stuff and tried to have my sketches reflect that.

After receiving feedback on the first poster, I was able to use halftones to achieve a gradient effect. I also changed the event info type to white to make it stand out more against the black background. Lastly I added a topographical map on top of the gradient to add to the indie feel and to make the poster more interesting.

I was able to create a successful gig poster by having a clear genre and using text and designs that help the reader understand what kind of band this poster is for. If someone was walking down the street they would easily be able to tell this is for an indie/modern band, which is exactly what I was going for.
