Metal I Aluminum Study
Concept: Simple interactive model that explores the malleability of aluminum
Solution: Final model involves 13 rolled strips of 16 gauge aluminum attached by a single axle. The model can be spun, but also works by pulling the axis back and forth- the friction causes all the pieces to lean to one side and then the other.
Process: The strips of aluminum vary in length and width (with an increment of 2mm in both directions), the edges of the strips are rounded to a diameter same as the width of each individual strip. holes are drilled at the center point of the rounded ends ensuring a smooth transition about the axle. The aluminum strips are then rolled on the machine at a radius correspondant to its length. The axle is made from 1/8 copper tubing which has been bent, hammered and finished off at the ends with a larger tubing.
