A book design adapting a passage from Marshall McLuhan's The Medium is the Message into an accordion-style booklet.

In reading McLuhan's text and researching his work, I was mainly interested in two of his concepts. The first was how he imagined the evolution of language and the evolution of media, with each step building off the last to create more complex systems of conveying information. The second was the idea that the medium of a message, the system that conveys information to an audience, inherently shapes the content it passes along and influences what audiences do or don't pay attention to.

These two concepts drove my design for this book. The visuals are minimal in the beginning, but as the reader progresses, they "evolve," with each successive motif building off the last. Initially unhindered, the text slowly bends to the spreading lines, eventually forced to comply to the grids the lines form.
