Gradient Mesh
Project 02

Problem
How can I create a realistic image in Adobe Illustrator?
Can I take a highly-detailed subject and make it photo-realistic in a vector based software without using Image Trace?

Solution
In order to make a realistic image, I used the gradient mesh tool to create a three-dimensional effect on a two-dimensional, vector-based software. I used a photo of a mammoth skeleton and created the tusks, skull, and jaw using the gradient mesh tool. In order to make the mammoth head, I used to pen tool to trace on top of the photo. Additionally, I added colors at different anchor points to the tusks, skull and jaw of the mammoth to make the elements look photo-realistic. Moreover, I added highlights and shadowing to the gradient mesh to make the mammoth skeleton appear real.
I then wanted to modernize the subject by taking it out of a typical museum setting and placing it in a pub environment. I made my own pattern and added it to the image in order to give the effect of a wallpaper. Although the mammoth skeleton head might look out of place today, I wanted to create another virtual reality within this art piece.
