Art Department Charlie Bone

Children of the Red King is a series of children's fantasy books, written by Jenny Nimmo, centred around a school age boy, Charlie Bone. Charlie and some of his school friends have special powers that lead them into all sorts of adventures throughout the series.

These are some design concepts I have created if this series were to be adapted into film.
Charlie Bone in Bloor Academy Cape & Yewbeam Family Tie

Bloor Academy is Charlie's school and there are three departments; music, drama and art. Charlie is in the music department and wears a blue cape. The Yewbeams are Charlie's paternal grandmother's family and are often the villains in the story. The appearance is inspired by actor Alfred Enoch.

Red King Costume

The Red King is an ancestral king, whose powers have passed down to his descendants within Bloor's Academy, including Charlie Bone.
Blue Boa Pre Transformation Concept

The Boa was a friend of the Red King. It was tortured by one of the King's sons to make it become lethal, and then 'healed' by one of the King's daughters so that it's victims became invisible, rather than being killed. This is a concept of the boa before it was tortured, and before it's appearance changed in the healing process.
Blue Boa Post Transformation Quick Sketch

This is an initial concept for the Boa after the healing process. The snake has been crossed with an African Hoopoe, and so has evolved to adopt the bird's recognisable crest.
Blue Boa Post Transformation Concept

It is the appearance after the transformation that gives the blue boa its name. It's skin has turned from black to a pale blue and silver with a crest of feathers on its head.
Ingledew's Bookshop Façade Elevation and Signage

The bookshop is a refuge space for the Children of the Red King, as Miss Ingledew is an ally and auntie to one of Charlie's endowed friends. Miss Ingledew lives above the shop, whose description offers the impression that it is easily looked over on the street, well loved but weathered.
