Paper Animal Assignment

For our first assignment of the semester, we were challenged to create a three-dimensional animal sculpture out of only a sheet of 24" x 35" bristol paper and PVA glue, without wasting any of the paper. This piece explores the nature of my chosen animal (the axolotl) and the nature of the paper medium with which it is depicted.

Tracing Paper: Describing Form

For this assignment, we were challenged to create a piece that depicts form using only tracing paper and PVA glue. I was inspired by the translucency and fragility of the seed pods and their potential for translation through the medium of both white and yellow tracing paper. This piece is all about small details, delicate forms, and the feeling of airy, weightless suspension.

Extension of Self

For our final project in this class, we had to create a piece that explored the theme of the extension of self; in addition, we had to choose one found object that would serve as the structure of the piece, as only minimal fasteners/adhesives were permitted. For this project, I created a lamp made out of laser-cut gingko leaves, which were preserved with glycerin and fastened together with minimal super glue to create the dome shape. I was particularly interested in how letters and words are an simultaneously an extension of + a filter of individual thought, which is represented by light in this metaphorical work. In this piece, the lamp represents the mind--the barrier between internal and external presence. The letter cut-outs in the lamp serve to extend and filter the light as an extension of mind.
