Graphicality #4
A workshop in which 10 people enact a human knot.
A human knot is a tradition team-building exercise. Starting in a circle, participants connect hands with two other people in the group to form the human knot. As a team they must then try to unravel the human knot by untangling themselves without breaking the chain of hands.
Diagramming the Knot
HD Video Still
A Video Instructional diagramming the movements of Human Knot #001. Using visual diagrams and a Chenille Stem model of Human Knot #001, it is a complete guide the structural movements of Human Knot #001.
Live Reenactment of Human Knot #001
Live Performance
In the main gallery room, 10 performers wear color coded suits and headphones. This is a still from the live feed of the performance that is A script produced from the original knot is read to each performer through their headphones.
In the adjacent room the script facilitator reads the script of Human Knot #001. The script directions are spoken directly into the headphones of the performers to be enacted immediately. A camera mounted above the performers provides the script reader with a live video feed. A pipe cleaner model of the Human Knot #001 also helps the script reader to follow the performer’s actions and ensure script completion.
In the main gallery room, the performers reenact the movements and dialogue of Human Knot #001. Performers immediately enact the directions spoken to them through their headphones. The reenactment of Human Knot #001 disperses and distills the conversation and simultaneous movement of the original Human Knot. It took an hour to reenact just 8 minutes of the original 40 minute Human Knot.
Public Shout Vote, or Directly Heard Democracy
Interactive Shout Voting System and Voting Booth
The first public shout vote held in Lichtensteig, Switzerland. The public could put forth proposals to be voted upon. Using a new auditory voting system, voters could vote as many times as they would like at any volume they desire.  Highly trained vote counters listened and counted the votes on their hand as they heard them.
Public Shout Vote Analysis
Vote #5 Audio File, Acrylic Paint, Graphite
Every vote undergoes a thorough recount. The audio from the vote is expanded and analyzed in detail– second by second to make sure every vote is heard.
Graphicality #1
Ongoing Workshop Series
Using the language of infographics, improvisation exercises and choreographic constraints participants work collectively to chart graphic interpretations of interpersonal relations, current events, economic happenings, and ephemeral poetry.
A performance of selected choreography identified in Graphicality Workshop #1. Conflating relation- poetics and the body are used to disrupt the aesthetic of certainty attached to the visual language of infographics.
Graphicality #2
Ongoing Workshop Series
Participants wear full body arrow costumes and can communicate only with body movement. Physically transposing the ways in which we indicate towards a cause, the other, and the self. In Self Systemized Simulations participants self-organize interpretations of the water cycle, a highway or allyship- in order to examine each individual’s role as an indicator within a larger system.
A performance of selected choreography identified in Graphicality Workshop #2. Performers actively diagram a video projection. Together the performers and video create kinetic infographics.
Grid Game
In Grid Game, duos work through a instructional of 23 diagrammed poses. Using the grid to position themselves, the duo is notified by a omnipresent voice if the pose is correct or incorrect.
Unknown to the participants the poses are derived from an online video of two teenagers playing a game of Twister at a birthday party in Wisconsin.
Grid Game Analysis
Using the poses as a control variable to analyze the behavior, relationship trajectory, and problem solving abilities of the duos. The analysis of pose accuracy is translated into diagrams overlaid directly onto the diagrammatic game board.
This infographics displays 4 different duos completing move 00 02 06 incorrectly. Placed circles diagram the duos incorrect foot positions. The circles are color coded according to the circle color orientations on Twister Boards.
Groupgeometry Lesson
Workshop, 2019
A public lesson in Groupgeometry: a community building and group stretching practice based on the principles of geometry. Illustrated on the board is the plane between two workshop participants. The participants are asked to describe the plane in seeable and un-seeable units of measurement.
Groupgeometry Guide
Artist Book, 2019
Realize the plane you are and constitute your relations with others. Also, learn how to make a Cylinder with people.
Groupgeometry Lesson
Workshop, 2019
After realizing their planar capabilities, the participants form a pentagonal pyramid together. They are then asked to find the volume between themselves.
Graphicality #4 (Analysis)
In this workshop participants enact data points. Following different relational rules they move in response to the other data points. In this exercise each data point must maintain a equilateral triangle with two other data points chosen at random. Using video documentation of the workshop, the triangles were identified and tracked.
