Book Cover Design/ Norwegian Wood

As part of our studio class in Term 2, I entered the Student Design Award for the Penguin Book Cover competition. I chose the category ‘Adult-Fiction’ which was to re-design the cover for Haruki Murakami’s book ‘Norwegian Wood’. My overall concept was to design a map-like book cover that warped around the book, due to the fact that the main character is mentally damaged by the death of his friend. So I thought that a map would be a good interpretation in order to portray that element of confusion, and the overall feeling of being lost and trying to find yourself again. I also decided to go for the classic wood theme, as this is the last setting where the main character sees his friend before she dies, which I felt needed to be portrayed as it’s such an essential element. For the colour scheme I decided to keep it very minimalistic. I went for grey, white and red, due to the fact that death is a huge topic throughout this book, and the story is also set in Japan, so I felt that a bright red along with some neutral tones would be an essential colour palette. I also decided to highlight one of the trees in red to portray the lonliness and isolation that the main character feels throughout his journey during the story.
