There are enough applications and machines that can interpret communications via gestures, motions, capturing sensors and etc. But we believe that communication starts with an interaction called eye contact. That is the beginning of the conversation as we defined from our perspectives and we can commonly hear that. And simply, reason why we specifically chose the target user as deaf and hard of hearing is because we experienced the language barriers by that for a long time, and when it became a common idea, we fixed our idea into making “something” to help hearing impairment.
Our project is a portable device that can interpret between different sign languages and others. This device is a daily device, so in any conditions, users can communicate through it. Name of a device is ‘En light’, when enlighten means to give intellectual, we believe that this device makes other people to understand more about users through better visual of communication. By twisting a device to turn on the device, because for every actions that people are doing requires a starting action, but conversation is different, when it starts with saying “excuse me”, we want that twisting is part of saying excuse me with a device.
At the beginning of the project, my previous project was about smart glasses that interpret the sound and motion and visualize that into wearable device. When idea was good, the goal of this project seem like endless and enormous, also it looked like one of cool feature in smart glass- es. So we pitched our ideas into a daily device that is specially made for specific reason, which is only for interpreting.
