014
graphic design exhibition

Three years ago, a lecturer gave us the last big project for our final study year in Raffles Shanghai. And,we were asked to design a identity system for our graduation exhibition show with the name "014 Graphic Design Exhibition". The "014" represents the entrance year of the graduate students which was on October 2014. The exhibition featuring around fifty design pieces by seven students created in between the two years of their diploma study with a lot of hard work and dedication.
What are those four different poster above? Is the visual/pattern made out of kids' Play Doh? Why?

Yes, it was made out of kids' Play Doh that I managed to find at Kids' toy shop near
my apartment in Shanghai.
When I started to mix different PlayDoh, I was trying to show the personality of 014 students who are unlike each other, yet they really help and support each other, and truly unique.
The pink and purple represents a friend who is bright, lively and lovable; the yellow with sprinkles was for someone who is cheerful, straight-forward and a bit crazy weird; the blue-green with tiny yellow was for the only guy in the class who is very calm and hard working.
What are you trying to express with the design?

"Dont be affraid to fail"------- Even if we fail, just create (again), play (again), and repeat.
This project was inspired by the perseverance of my graphic designer friends on their way to find (sometimes struggle and fail) the most creative idea for a project.
Keyword: Create, Play, Collaborate (repeat from beginning)
The original banner was actually a single standing banner that is informational like the left one above. However, since there are two standing banner side by side, what if it is an illusion of a ball (or a planet)?
What are you trying to express with the abstract planet like pattern?

I was trying to express the idea of creative process in step-by-step progress with four separate poster above. However, it is not really appealing visual for a design exhibition. So I tried and tried to make the visual less structured and static, and change the visual to be more unpredictable and free.
Yet, I was not expecting that a PlayDoh would look like a tiny colorful planet with a lot of story and quirk.

The picture below: Public ticket and Tote bag.

I actually did silk screen printing with the tote bag, but only with one fluorescent orange color (and I think its not as good as colorful one, to simple but some of you might like it better!)
The picture below: simple brochure of introduction and guide for every designers and their design pieces.
Why do you upload this work now? Not in 2016? It's been 3 years.

Yes, this work was from 2016 and I just uploaded it on 2019. Hmm. Before, this work is one of the work that I treasure because I really had so much fun creating it. But, I didn't know how to present it in more professional way for people to see, especially I am a fresh graduate.

I just need to think more before uploading design work mindlessly. So there it is! After all these time,
I finally had courage to upload it after making a lot of editing here and there. Thank you all! Cheers!

Oh! Five pictures above were several posters trial before the final one! I like it because how diverse and colorful the poster is!
