EMDR as a method can be integrated with the other approaches, since we all work on the patient's history, what changes is the focus. Some work on the family system, others on behavior, others on meaning. For many patients, EMDR is more helpful for their problems than other conventional therapies. In 1987, Francine Shapiro, an American psychologist, discovered that voluntary eye movements reduced the intensity of the anguish of negative thoughts. He initiated an investigation (Shapiro, 1989) with traumatized subjects in the Vietnam War and victims of sexual abuse to measure the effectiveness of EMDR. EMDR significantly reduced the symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in these subjects.
