Positive/Negative Shape Drawing

For this project, we were asked to not look at the objects, but to look at the shapes around them. I started by walking all the way around the still life looking for interesting compositions of negative space. Once I found a spot I was happy with, I created a few different studies from different angles and I repeated this in a couple different places around the still life. Then, I looked though all of my studies to find one that had some interesting shapes and pulled you eye around the composition. The one I chose for my final had a wide variety of sizes and shapes and I liked the repetition of the circular shape going outward. Once I sketched my final composition onto bristol board, I used black acrylic painted to fill in the negative shapes because it pushed them to the background and created high contrast with the large positive shape.
