Prompt : Choose a material found at the Resources for Rhode Island Education Recycling Center and repurpose that material into a new usable object.

I decided to chose yardsticks for my material.  I began my design process by conducting a series of material studies, to acquire an idea of the full potential of my material (see photos at end).  Through these studies I became most fascinated with the patterns and visual appearance of the yardsticks.  This interest in patterns led me to design and create  this clock, made entirely of recycled yardsticks.

This piece attempts to devalue measurement by deconstructing rulers meant for precise measurement, and reconstructing them into meaningless visual patterns.  Each line and number seen around the clock frame is intended to be a precise tool for measurement, however, in this context the numbers and lines lose that quality and become purely aesthetic.

Time and measurement are all relative, due to the fact that they are both created by the human mind.  The constructs of time and measurement are fascinating to me because they are potentially the most widely used invention throughout the world.

I decided to make the clock face entirely blank, because I enjoy the visual juxtaposition of the meaningless lines and numbers, against a blank face.  Despite the face of the clock being blank, one can still easily read the time due to the fact that concept time is so deeply ingrained in human culture.
