Resilient Homes Design Challenge
Philippines

Based on the requests of the competition organized by the World Bank and the United Nations, the project focused on the planning of a transitional home for 4-5 people. It is a structure that has a low cost, <10’000 $, eco sustainable, attentive to the possibilities of construction with material and workers of the place. In addition to this the structure must find a solution to the azard of floods and windstorms over 250 km / h.

The solution has been traced, and has proved successful, through the use of bamboo as the main building material: the entire structure uses this material, with the addition of PVC for the barrels that serve for the floating of the structure, plinths in CLS for the stability of the water guides and safety metal joints.

The structure was designed precisely to be able to float, through a system mathematically calculated of empty barrels and guides firmly embedded, which allow its floatation during the flooding and its repositioning during the dry period. Also attentive to the climate of the areas that can be affected by this kind of calamity, the structure is equipped with large portions of shading, which also allow the passage of air and light. A careful study of the possibilities of sustainability, from materials, to renewable energy using a wind turbine blade, to the reuse of water through purification systems has been greatly appreciated by the jury.

The project is also attentive to the social aspect, investigating the possible stages of construction, and how local workers can be followed by a few specialized figures, each creating their own home.

A very simple project, which however responds to nuumerous questions of a physical, architectural and social nature.
