ART 121 Contour Line Still Life. Bailey Lepley. 2019.
This is one of my first finished observational drawings from ART 121. I decided that I wanted to really challenge myself and work with a complicated item such as the shoe and I am really proud of the results. The point of this assignment was to help us understand how to communicate form and shading using nothing but contour lines and line weight. I feel like this lesson was very valuable along with all the other things I have learned thus far in this class and feel like I have been actively using methods such as gestural drawing in my personal drawings ever since learning it. I really have lots of positive things to say about this piece like my use of good proportions, detailed work, and the texture I used to help convey ripped canvas fabric. However I feel as though I could have done more to bring out highlights and lighter line weights. I also used a very soft pencil for my initial sketching which made erasing my measuring lines difficult and is shown in the final product. In the future I will likely use a harder pencil for my initial gestural drawing and then go in with a softer pencil so that erasing will be more effective.
