A Coffee Table
Date: October - November 2018
Furniture Design using the CAD program Rhinoceros

This table is inspired by an element of natural landscape: a volcano, specifically it is inspired by the Santa Ana volcano in El Salvador. It is broad and large, with some visible layers. My colleague and I chose this kind of inspiration because of its aesthetic. we decided to look volcanos as a beautiful element of nature rather than just an area of landscape that can be aggressive. Through more research, we were also drawn by the volcano's texture, shape, and lava as an organic aspect.
Some keywords of the project are: texture, visible layers, heavy, delicate, organic, senses, inner power.
The base of the coffee table consists of fourteen layers of plywood (3/4" thick each). All layer have been cut in the CNC machine using round and abstract shapes inspired by craters, each one has a hole in the middle that gets bigger going down to each layer, showing depth. Four dowels are installed through the entire base, also functioning as the four legs of the table.
Semi-acrylic glass has been used on top to be the table top, being 30 x 35 inches.
The total height of the coffee table is 19.5 inches.
3D model designed with Rhinoceros and rendered using Flamingo nxt plugin.
