Speculative Design

This is a work from 5 week “System, Service and Infrastructure Design“ studio at Srishti Institute of Art Design and Technology. The focus was to unearth and unpack how experiences are shaped by service-systems and underlying socio-technical infrastructures. A particular focus was engaging with the methods of service-system and experience design not only as proposals for solutions, but also as ways of probing into the hidden, and emerging aspects of constantly evolving and dynamic service-systems and infrastructures.
The context for the studio was Gated communities.

“What are the outcomes when a co-op of domestic-helpers emerges in a gated-society?”

We have tried to answer this by producing a piece of “speculative evidence” from the anecdotes of domestic helpers and what they imagined as alternatives to the existing. We believe this is one possible way we could extrapolate from such future-facing evidence back into the present, to help transform decision making today.

We centered our research inquiry around domestic helpers and a speculative co-operative of them through participatory design and service design tools. Our final output was a set of blueprint showing the current and the speculated service for a domestic helper in a gated society. This study (which has the potential of being critical) would help to look into what the future of a gated society entails with a domestic helpers’ co-op.
