Unmarried Coronary Artery Disease Patients at Higher

An experienced cardiologist, Dr. Rajan Bhatt has worked at Spectrum Dermatology & Vein Center in Scottsdale, Arizona, since 2010. Actively engaged in the evolution of his profession, Dr. Rajan Bhatt belongs to a number of heart-related groups, including the American Heart Association.

According to a recent study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, heart disease patients who are single are more likely to die than those who are married. Past research has shown that people who go through a divorce have a higher risk of death than others, but there haven’t been many research trials that look at the correlation between marital status and death risk in heart disease patients.

For this trial, researchers studied data from more than 6,000 patients receiving cardiac catheterization treatment for their coronary artery disease. After nearly four years of follow-up, the researchers found that unmarried patients were 24 percent more likely to die overall, 45 percent more likely to die from a heart-related condition, and 52 percent more likely to experience a heart attack. As a result of this trial, the researchers say that marital status should be considered in future treatment of patients with coronary artery disease, and that more studies about this relationship are warranted.
