BESIDE TABLE REDESIGN
By Marco Calhau Comín

The main goal with this project was to develope one of the OpenDesk designs with the recently arrived CNC milling machine in my School Design workspace.

I have always loved this type of projects with so much importance on fabrication and the three dimensional phase, having in mind this, and the need of a new coffee table for our living room at home, I decided to connect this two problems and go for it.

In the opendesk website I didn’t found the perfect model to download and directly fabricate it, but I found the beside table model which I thought to redesign it and accomodate it to my necessities.
These necessities and requirements were given first by the dimensions and proportions we needed for the coffe table, and second, by the maximum workingspace of the milling´s machine table.
I was lucky with this that the proportions we wanted for the coffe table, fitted the medium size CNC.
So everything was okey. Now lets work!

After downloding the full kit of the Beside Table design from the Opendesk.cc website, I did a long redesign of the CAD drawigns to redimensionate the table in terms of proportions and plywood thickness I was going to use.

When I received the okey from the design school workspace manager I start working on the CAM programs for the CNC based on the CAD drawings DXFs.
After this brief step we started with the first CAM program, we choosed the easiest board to prevent problems or unforeseens with the mill, advance and drill speeds.

Tolerance fittings was one of the hardest steps in the fabrication of this redesign of the besid table by OpenDesk.
Understanding the basics of the path compensation with the CAM software was necessary to find the best fitting. In any case, I decided to use wooden spikes to ensure a perfect and long lasting joint of the pieces.

After finishing the fabrication phase, the assembling was difficult with the side and top pieces but easy with the other ones thankfully to the loose fitting tolerances.

Thanks for watching!
