/ Introduction /
ADEPT is a concept aiming to solve the problem of distracted walking in public. Since almost everyone owns a cell phone nowadays, texting while walking becomes a norm, causing pedestrian deaths to skyrocket. While limiting people's usage on their phones in the public space is pretty much unrealistic, the solution comes down to ensuring the pedestrians' safety when they are distracted walking. ADEPT provides the solution of having a simple and inviting device that embeds into a smart clothing. The device essentially becomes the third eye of the person, having stereoscopic vision and mini lidar to detect any danger around the users (even behind the wall), and sends out alert to the smart clothing, which creates sophisticated haptic patterns to notify the users to be aware of their surroundings. Below is a short version of this project.
/ Process /
The project kicked off by having a few brainstorming sessions first to explore on different ways to wear the device. To better understand which wearing mechanism fitted the best, I looked into the scenarios that a person might encounter in the public and found that the device should have a big enough interacting surface, which allowed the device to generate different haptic patterns, to notify the users based on their scenarios in public. This was why I eventually landed on the solution of having a device living on a shirt that generated haptic feedbacks. Later in the process, I ideated on the look of the device explored on the mechanism on the shirt for the device to live on so that they would not get brushed off easily.
/ CMF /
Based on my persona (Jake and Amelia), I came up with four CMF (Color, Material and Finishes): CB (Classic black) and SB (Shaded blue) for Jake and MI (Minerals) and HA (Harmony) for Amelia.
/ DETAIL /
To fit with Jake's taste, CB and SB have geometric contour with slit cuts on the area where they will contact with Jake's body to create more friction. While for Amelia, MI and HA have soft contour with material contrast to promote more jewelry-like feeling.
/ Cover system /
When purchasing the smart clothing, the shirt will come with a cover that matches with the shirt in color, disguising the device on the shirt to minimize its effect on the appearance. This allows the users to have the total freedom to choose what they want to wear even with the device on the shirt.
