SUBVERT: Alternative Art In Seattle

SUBVERT
A tattoo and street art magazine, SUBVERT stands out from the rest. It's in your face visual style makes it more than just an interesting read, but an art piece in and of itself.
Visual Audit
For my visual audit, I really wanted to make sure that I nailed down the mood of the magazine, because it would be essential to making sure that everything felt cohesive and grunge. I was inspired by a lot of punk aesthetic, graffiti, and gothic fonts that I felt would help create a ver Seattle aesthetic within the magazine.
Sketches
I wanted to make sure that SUBVERT had a really organic feeling to it, so I did plenty of sketches.  Some of these actually ended up in the final rendition of the project because I felt that they really added to the feeling of creation and artistry that I was trying to convey.
First Renditions
The first renditions of this project definitely felt like they were headed in the right direction, but they were also very chunky. the proportions of text to photo felt off, and nothing felt organic. I knew that there was something missing.
Back to The Drawing Board
With this knowledge, I went back and looked at how my subject matter was influencing my form. This was where the magic happened. I realized that both tattooing and street art are areas of art that are down and dirty. My designs were not reflective of that. So, I got some ink, and got to work.

The addition of organic shapes like ink splatters really helped to establish the organic, messy and creative nature of the publication, as well as give it an amazing amount of visual interest.
