FOOD THEATER-adaptive reuse of an abandoned Synagogue

In this project, we study and redesign a  former Synagogue that was abandoned in 2006  with a food and culture program. The synagogue is centered around an existing organization that focuses on food-justice, neighborhood- and cultural connections.

Part of the challenge of this design project was to translate issues on food and parts of the organizations mission into a diverse and sustainable program.

Through the research, we can easily find that the unemployment rate in that area is very high. According to the Engel Coefficient, thses people need to spend most of their income on food, and they do not have enough money to enjoy their social life. So I am thinking to offer them a space where people can not only enjoy food but also have fun. After comparing the similarity between a theater and the food center, I decided to make a FOOD THEATER, where people can see the process of making dishes and learn from others about making food.

In this food theater, people can participate the role of either audiences or performers. Even they can change roles during their different experience. In this way, the people there can not only get their needs like food, job, entertainment, but also attract people in other parts of the city come and consume.

The main intervention includes the extention of the additional building on the north part (which was built around 1950s) in order to make a better relationship between the original synagogue and the additional structure, a long stage coming from the existing stage in the main hall and a new-glassed facade.

People can get fresh vegetables, meat and dairy products in the Market place. And they can cook themselves or ask the chefs to cook for them in the cooking show area. After that them can look for seats in the restaurant and enjoy their meal and the cooking show.

Both the chefs and customers could be treated as performers or audiences in different perspective. Even when people are eating on the balcony outside the new facade, pedestrians on the street can enjoy their performance at the same time.
