Finnish December Diary

Finnish December Diary is a fibre/paper art diary I created between the 2nd and 31st
of December 2018, during "Silence Awareness Existence" Art Residency at Arteles Creative Center, Finland. The project consists of 30 fibre /paper art pieces (including two triptychs and a diptych).


I have received Travel and Training Award 2018 for the realisation of this project, granted by the Arts Council of Ireland.



Day 1 (2nd of December) - Travelling Basket. Arrival

Materials: various packages picked on the way to Finland, mostly at the Heathrow airport (food packages). Some materials I brought with me from Ireland, like the wires wrapped in paper, for the skeleton of the basket.

Day 2 (3nd of December) - Warm Greys

Materials: ash coloured pulp (lokta fibres and an ash paper fruit tray from Tesco), Finnish plant fibres, a black paper found at Arteles, paper and metallic threads.

Day 3 (4nd of December) - Colours of Dusk

Materials: ash coloured pulp, various bits of paper as inclusions.

Day 4 (5th of December) - A Lullaby for Liz. The First Starry Night

Materials: ash coloured pulp, black paper and silver crepe paper as inclusions, silver Japanese thread.

Day 5 (6th of December) - Where the Rakers Sleep (a triptych)

Materials: ash coloured pulp, leaves, lokta fibre (sheet)

Day 10 (11th of December) - Weaving a Perfect Day?

Materials: paper pulp (beige), linen thread - warp, nettle threads in various colours - weft

Day 11 (12th of December) - Warm Skin

Materials: paper pulp (orange), bark from a dead branch I found in a field

Day 12 (13th of December) - Longing Belonging

Materials: paper pulp (orange, green and ash), lokta sheet, twigs, a piece of white paper, a dead wasp I found on my window sill.

Materials: paper pulp (beige, orange), bits of various teas from Ja Min, lokta sheet, pieces of paper.

Materials: paper pulp (orange), birch bark - from a dead tree, lokta paper yarn,
paper raffia, a piece of bark from another tree found in a pile of sauna wood.

Day 17 (18th of December) - Seven Layers of Silence

Materials: paper pulp (white), black & white printed photograph I took in the woods near Arteles, lokta sheet, paper thread, twigs, lokta paper yarn, metallic thread.

in the Ritajärvi nature reserve in Sastamala, a small branch found in the woods

Materials: empty tea bags, tree bark, paper pulp (white, beige, orange, brown, green, blue, ash) - all my pulp selection placed in the empty tea bags

Day 20 (21st of December) - Clean Dirt. Sauna and Salmiakki

Materials: paper pulp (beige), lokta sheet, ashes from Arteles sauna stove, a few drops of Salmiakki.

Day 21 (22nd of December) - Sabbatical Many Things

Materials: paper pulp (beige, blue, ash and beige with added turmeric), dried sunflower petals I got from my friend Thomas, a plant with grey/silver leaves I found at Arteles.

Day 22 (23nd of December) - Hiding in work

Materials: paper pulp (beige), linen thread, a cardboard tube for stiffening.

Materials: paper pulp (white), lokta sheet, birch and eucalyptus leaves from sauna vihta.

of the participants in their rooms (with parts of the photos coloured with markers), pieces of various papers.

Materials: small canvas panels found in Arteles art supplies closet, spruce bark found on the ground near Arteles

Day 29 (30th of December) - Arteles Uncombed - a triptych

Materials: paper pulp - various colours, small pieces of various papers with drawings and writings by Arteles December 2018 residents, printed photographs I took of the residents in various situations through the month, lokta sheet.

Materials: deer droppings, two leaves found on Arteles grounds, small amount of beige paper pulp
