Empathy

This is an oil painting I made after a visit to the pediatric operating room to watch a procedure on a young boy for a medical illustration course. In the moment, I was struck by the sight of the child laid out on the table, and by my emotional response to his youth, fragility, and vulnerability. I created this painting to convey the idea of the human ideal not necessarily being health versus sickness, but being empathy.
