Curate App

Curate is an app designed for woman of all ages who are into fashion but don’t necessarily have the time to shop for clothes.

We have designed a fashion subscription service that sends you a box of outfits curated to your taste. Just take a simple quiz and leave the rest to us. Choose a monthly plan suited to your price range and receive a box of outfits every month with free delivery and returns.

Our vision was to provide a service for women of any age who just don’t have time to shop for clothing. We wanted to make sure that our app was designed with our users in mind. Therefore we’ve made the app easy to use and came up features that would save a lot of time.

Upon exploring different concepts for our UX/UI brief, we had finally come to an agreement to settle on the clothing subscription box app. We believe that it includes some original elements as well as fulfil our brief which revolves around the idea of transport.

Our initial idea was to create a clothing rental app which took on the subscription box concept. But before that was confirmed we realised it was ideal to gather data through conducting a survey and further research in that realm. The results we received steered us to further develop the app on buying clothes rather than renting. With that being the core aspect we formed our goal: create a service which specifically targets women of all ages to buy outfits that are curated to their specific tastes.

In order to understand whether designing a clothing rental app would be a demand for everyday users that fit in the range of our personas, we decided to create a survey. Our main concern with our idea was whether people would be interested in the idea of a clothing rental app.

With that in mind, we created a survey through Survey Monkey and shared in on Facebook and amongst our friends. From the results we have gathered, we can confidently say that 66.67% (16/24) of the people won’t consider renting clothes. A couple of reason would be the fact that people are concerned about hygiene, some prefer wearing new clothes and some liked to keep their clothes.

Although the survey wasn’t conducted across a reasonable amount of people, the statistics we have gathered applies to the personas we want to develop this app for. With further research to help back up our statistics, we were confident to make the final decision of changing the clothing rental concept to selling brand new clothing instead.

Moving on from the design sketch activities that helped develop ideas for our app, we came to the initial stages of how our app might function in terms of the content we’re having. I came up with twelve screen sketches that featured the more important screens.

Overall, the feedback received from the user testing was relatively useful. Most people who tested my wireframe sketches thought that the clothing subscription box app was a fun idea. They particularly liked the feature of keeping the box a mystery before the customer receives it. Some people thought it was a shopping app and I think that having clear descriptions would clarify what the purpose of our app. Some questioned the idea of having a blog as the tester personally didn’t enjoy writing, she suggested to take on the idea of sharing outfit pictures instead.

Lastly, I got some compliments on the returns courier service with allows the user to return their parcel without going to the post office. All they needed to do is to book a time at their convenience for the courier to come to pick it up. I’ve received many compliments on our ideas as well as feedback on aspects to improve on.

Initial concepts and development of our app

After another successful user testing session, I collated all the feedback and turned it into three different categories, the positives, negatives and aspects that needed improving. By doing that I got an overview of what were the things we did right with our design and what were the not so good areas that need improving.
