The two main operations for arthritis are either to clean out the joint called: PIP joint debridement or with more severe disease: PIP joint replacement (arthroplasty). If the joint cartilage is sufficiently worn the surgeon may replace the joint. Traditionally a silicone rubber spacer was used. This gives reasonable results and is still used but in an effort to improve the results newer anatomical joint replacements are used made of metal and plastic replacements like those used in other joints.
