Rethinking the Body: the White Project [18F Sophomore]

The look was designed during the sophomore fall semester of RISD's apparel undergraduate program.
The given topic was the "White Project." And I was expected to use only white fabrics with the idea of rethinking the body in mind.
My main concepts are displacement of body parts, unconventional way of dressing, and juxtaposition of garment parts. As an exploration directed to rethink the body, my project revolves around how various body parts can be dressed differently than people normally would. Individual garments are worn or placed at unconventional parts of the figure to achieve a “weird” look. By doing that, I aim to question the orthodox thoughts the society has created for the heterogeneous garments, which have been more or less confined to be worn in a certain way.
My main objective is to show how clothes can be worn differently and to challenge the conventional thoughts about the human body. Trying to push the long-established boundaries that restrict the garments to be worn monotonously, my garments are not created for body parts that they would be in traditional standards. For example, the pants, which are typically worn on the legs, are made for the upper body. And the cuff, which is typically made to protect the wrists, is now made to cover the hips.
The pants are worn on the upper body. The person has an extra-head which is wearing the shirt. The actual wearer is faceless. She is speechless because of the garments, and her expressions cannot be discerned.
The whole outfit completes a storyline, like how the sleeve is reversed, comes out from the center placket, then hides back into the shirt and becomes the skirt in an enlarged version. I try to link the skirt to the top shirt in order to complete an interesting story and encourage the audience’s eyes to move around the whole silhouette. Their eyes will move around the whole silhouette. Staring at the weird garments, they will then be caught up in trying to figure out what is actually going on.
