Constricting Space

Constricting Space- Winter 2019

A window acts as a portal, allowing us to see the exterior world from a comfortable interior space, permitting only light and color to continuously shift and flow through the glass. This dynamic experience however, is usually "overlooked" in most ordinary environments. Wanting to bring attention to this common interaction between interior and exterior spaces, it was necessary to redirect one's focus to a single point of direction. Creating a separate structure inside an existing interior space that would constrict a person's view to a single framed window was one possible way to achieve the desired effect.
Four distinct inflatable chambers were linked together inside a large vacant studio. The structure formed a twenty-five foot long S shaped, double curve. Each chamber's entrance was slightly narrowed restricting the viewer's vantage point. As light flooded through the window and dispersed into first the red chamber, and then into the other three, the viewer was enticed to move forward. After passing through each chamber with increasing curiosity, the viewer was finally rewarded with a greater appreciation for the unique connection that the window allows us to have between the exterior and interior environments.
