"Design is so complicated" - Minimalism vs Abstract Expressionism Poster Design

The faded, smoky mix of text toward the bottom emanate the way smoke rises up. This was done with the quote in mind “There is no smoke without fire”. During the 50’s both Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism were at the forefront of art and design, with both having complete polar opposite ideas of how art should look. In today’s design, abstract expressionism is rarely if ever seen, whilst minimalism is now the staple for many brands who rely on this type of design to market their companies.

Choosing a simple colour pallette has allowed for the text to not be overshadowed by loud and multicolouful imagery, and keeps the user attention focused on the main quote by Paul Rand, after which the eye tracks down to what could have been in Minimalism’s place, abstract expressionism.
