Militarized Nature
Natura Militaris
The strategic project, by following the All London Green Grid Plan, proposes a green infrastructure around the Royal Artillery historical home in Woolwich, supporting both wildlife and new programs. Paintball (indoor and outdoor scenarios, speedball, wood paintball) features for the British Military Fitness and outdoor sport activities are extensively provided in the proposal and they are essential for managing the semi-natural habitats. Alike some military training areas over the UK – Salisbury Plain, Dartmoor, and Castle Martin – where endangered animal species have unexpectedly found an ideal habitat, “Militarized nature” designs a symbiosis between the boot-camp activities and the wildlife, suggesting potential solutions for green infrastructures in the city.
The project should appear to be a continuous green space from Oxleas Wood to the Thames Barrier, proper both for animals and humans. The designed military landscape would spot the three centuries narration of the Royal Artillery in Woolwich.

In order to achieve the ambition of the proposal, GIS tools were used for studying animal habitats and movements through the current-green-unconnected parks of the site, such as the Woolwich Common and Maryon Park.
The weakest animal paths were fixed by designing wildlife corridors and improving the critical habitat patches.

Finally, the programs were chosen according to the different semi-natural habitats. Paintball, for example, is used as hydroseeding for managing the acid-grassland-rich habitats while the natural swimming pools provide suitable habitats for amphibians.
